Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help reduce creosote buildup in your chimney flue.

Importance of Seasoned Firewood

Using seasoned firewood is crucial in maintaining a cleaner flue. Seasoned wood is wood that has been dried for at least six months, allowing the moisture content to drop below 20%. This type of wood burns more completely and produces less creosote, a tar-like substance that can build up in your chimney.

When buying firewood, look for cracks in the end grain and a lighter color compared to fresh wood. These are indications of well-seasoned wood that will burn efficiently and safely.

Avoiding Softwoods

Softwoods, such as pine and spruce, tend to burn quickly and produce more creosote than hardwoods. They contain higher amounts of sap, which contributes to creosote buildup and increases the risk of chimney fires.

Instead, opt for hardwoods like oak, maple, or hickory. These woods burn at a higher temperature, producing less smoke and creosote, which in turn helps keep your chimney cleaner.

Storing Firewood Properly

Proper storage of your firewood is essential to ensure it remains dry and ready to burn. Stack wood off the ground, using a rack or pallets, and cover the top with a tarp while leaving the sides open for air circulation.

This setup helps the wood to continue drying and prevents moisture from rain or snow from seeping in. Dry, well-stored wood contributes to a cleaner burn and reduces the risk of chimney issues caused by excess moisture.
